PARADISE KISS - Sakurada Miwako; 2 / 8

[character history / background]:
In Tokyo, Japan, Sakurada Hirohiko, a famous photographer, and Kouda Ruriko, a successful shoujo mangaka, were married; they gave birth to their first daughter, Mikako. Several years later, however, they divorced; Kouda Mikako grew up in an apartment building with her mother and her childhood friend, Sachida Tsutomu, and upon graduating high school with him at Yazawa Institute for Artistic Design (majoring in apparel design), was wed into the Sachida family, and started her own fashion line - the super adorable, increasingly popular Happy Berry brand; her husband served as her photographer in magazine shoots, a professional like his father-in-law.

This is Mikako’s background - this is the legend that lingered in the Sakurada household when Sakurada Hirohiko and Kouda Ruriko remarried, and gave birth to their second daughter, Sakurada Miwako. The family still lived in the same apartment complex, but this time, the children their daughter formed lifelong friendships with were the children of Mikako’s old friends - so much time had passed. Miwako’s best friends were Nagase Arashi, the son of a punk rock singer and his wife (a high school friend of Mikako’s, Risa) who designed punk clothing for children; and Tokumori Hiroyuki, the studious son of the local bar owner, where everyone in the complex hung out - even if they were underage. From the time they were toddlers, to the time they were finishing junior high school, Miwako, Hiro, and Arashi were inseparable, and the best of friends.

In this growing up situation, it’s very predictable that the two boys would fall in love with the girl - like a fairytale, a childhood romance. This time, however, that love tore the friends apart - the princess loved both of the princes. Miwako started dating Arashi when they were fifteen, by “coincidence” - as she put it, they were “at that age” where things erupted by themselves when the two were alone - but at the same time, found out that she and Hiro loved each other mutually; Arashi was none too happy with this, and forced Miwako to swear that she would never see or speak to Hiroyuki again, or else he would break up with her. Devastated, Miwako complied; shortly thereafter, Miwako’s parents left Japan - her father traveling the world to photograph the skies in different countries, and her mother following to write travel-themed shoujo manga - and Miwako moved into her sister’s house, outside of their apartment complex; Arashi and his mother also had secured a new home, and the childhood trio was split. Hiroyuki decided to attend the prestigious Seiei Academy for high school.

Hoping to be able to design clothes like her sister whom she so idolised, Miwako enrolled in Yazawa Institute for Artistic Design for high school, where Mikako had gone; Arashi also enrolled, as his mother, too, had gone to the school, and the two lovebirds travelled a path to their dreams, just barely stitched together. A stitch tore when, at the age of 16, Arashi could not control his insecurities, his rage, or his sexual desire - in general, he could not control himself - and forced himself upon Miwako; despite the fact that her boyfriend had raped her, Miwako forgave him, and returned to his apartment smiling the next morning.

Two years later, Miwako and Arashi were seniors in high school. They became involved in the senior fashion show at Yaza Arts, as was necessary for fashion design majors, and befriended talented pattern-maker, transgendered Yamamoto Daisuke Isabella, and the genius, poisonous prince character, designer-to-be Koizumi George. In their group for the show, George drew the designs, Isabella made the patterns, and Miwako and Arashi made the clothes; however, they were not satisfied with being limited to only one outfit, and together they created the brand, Paradise Kiss. George secured an atelier for them in the basement room his uncle had formerly used as a bar, and they renovated it into their own design-world paradise. Despite such high hopes for the show, though, Paradise Kiss had no model for their dress.

This is when the manga starts! Arashi and Isabella went hunting on the Tokyo streets for a model, and ran into Hayasaka Yukari, a stuck-up, hot-tempered fox from Seiei Academy (remember that school?); after she fainted due to their eccentric looks (she was being chased around by a guy with a safety pin in his lip and a six foot tall drag queen in Victorian bustles!), they took her back to the atelier. Once she recovered, she argued with Arashi, despite Miwako’s cries for Arashi to calm down, over college, denouncing the group as “freaks” who lived in a “fantasy land,” and shot down their dreams of her being their model; as she stormed out, Miwako frantically called out, “I’m sorry, Caroline!” - it was the first name that came to mind, you know. Startled, Yukari left her student passbook on the atelier steps. Inside - it contained a very recent picture of Miwako’s former childhood love, Tokumori Hiroyuki.

After a few days of hanging out and trying to convince Caroline to be their model, even going so far as to get Yukari’s hair cut - and by Kisaragi Seiji, at that: a make-up and hair design teacher at Yaza Arts, formerly renowned worldwide for his talent, and Miwako’s first unrequited love (despite the twenty year age gap?) that sparked a rivalry between Arashi and Hiro in junior high - Miwako and Caroline became close friends. As the series progressed, the two girls quickly became the best of friends, helping each other out in their romantic affairs, and even offering places to stay in times of need. Caroline was the one who sparked the realisation in Miwako’s heart that, even if she thought she loved Hiro and Arashi the same, the fact that she chose to stay with Arashi meant she loved him more.

At the point I am taking her, the group has just finished their participation in the Yazagaku Fashion Showcase, so the development between Arashi, Hiro, and Miwako that occurs during the New Year and also high school graduation will not have any bearing here.

[character abilities]: Miwako is most talented in her sewing ability; she creates clothes from scratch if not on a daily, then on a weekly basis, and is heavily involved in everything from elegant embroidery to artfully destroying clothes for a ‘punk‘ effect. Beyond sewing, her major talents lie in make-up and hair design - she is capable of a wide array of hair styles, and sports a different one every day; a huge talent of hers is her ability to dress herself, and others, to look incredibly cute and chic - her strong point is in her style. She is very optimistic and cheery, which usually gives her friends and the people she is talking to a feeling of warmth (or like you just want to pick her up and hug her, as Caroline put it). She’s very understanding and open-minded, and so is a good listener if you really, really don’t want to be told that you’re wrong - you’ll never be wrong. With less practical purposes, Miwako’s ace at playing the Dreamcast / PlayStation2 video game, Space Channel 5, and is totally in-the-know for sending e-mails and text messages on her cell phone.

[character personality]:
Miwako is a strange bird. She’s a rather eccentric character, as most artistic people are, and compared to the residents of the ‘real’ world, is quite offbeat. She has a very active imagination, and, partnered with wild ideas, can very easily startle or even confuse people with her eccentricity. She is a person who, when excited, will call a person by the first name that comes to mind if she doesn’t know their name. She’s rather impulsive, and doesn’t think about what she says before she says it - a lady who shoots from the lip. She’s not, however, the most intelligent, neither in book smarts nor in common sense (she’s quite ditsy), so sometimes her quick comments can land her with a virtual “Idiot” sticker slapped on her forehead.

Miwako is a very easily excited character. She’s very empathetic with everyone (yes, even strangers), and is prone to become even more emotional over something than the person directly experiencing it. That said, she’s extremely sentimental and sensitive - overly emotional, but not in a whiny way. She’s not a very selfish person, and will probably be the one to cry more than the person who was actually hurt (or on a happier note, celebrate more than the person who actually achieved something). She’s very caring as a friend, or as a stranger, and is upset by other people being unhappy. Miwako is a great person to go to not for advice, but for emotional support. She’s not very in tune with other people’s emotions, in that she can’t immediately tell if you are feeling bad or what is wrong, but once you confide in her, she’ll be there for you 100% along the way. Being so caring, she’s not very confrontational, and is very joy-oriented; Miwako wants everything to flow smoothly, with lots of smiles and laughs and picnics - as little tears as possible, please. These attributes, plus being rather outgoing and immensely friendly, makes it very easy for Miwako to make new friends. (Because of such a caring and nurturing personality, she is also a very good cat owner - SEVEN CATS, at the very least, live in her apartment.)

It comes as no surprise, then, that Miwako is a very optimistic person. In fact, painfully so - her optimism, paired with her strange naïveté, often cloud her vision of the actuality of a situation. Miwako is a person who has not been so much sheltered from the ‘real world,’ as she has been detached from it, being raised in a family comprised of only famous artists, with neighbours who were much the same, and going to art schools instead of a regular high school. Her parents and friends and neighbours have all been extremely kind and encouraging, open-minded people, and very lenient with what she could and could not do; she also has not felt the pressure of not having enough money very often, or has ever had to be stressed over not making high enough grades, nor has she had to even consider college entrance exams. Due to such a comfortable life, she has become very naïve to other types of households, having only known families like this for her entire life; therefore, it becomes hard for her to comprehend that other people live differently than she does, perhaps with very strict and closed-minded parents, or with a lot of financial or school problems, or with a lot of pressure placed on them every day. Hearing things so different from her own life are very shaking to her, and of course, upset her greatly. She is a child who has probably never met a sincerely bad person in her entire life, and because of this, she has maintained a strange sense of naïveté and innocence throughout the past eighteen years.

That innocence is not untainted, though. As mentioned in her history, Miwako was raped by her boyfriend, Arashi, when they were sixteen years old. Since then, Miwako has tried extremely hard to take in both Arashi’s good and bad qualities, such as his extreme possessiveness and anger issues. She tries to oblige him as much as she can, and consequently, has become a hypersexual individual. She goes about this super sexuality in a strangely naïve way, though - she does not comprehend that these are private matters, taking on the assumption that everyone does it (or will do it), therefore no one minds hearing about it. Miwako is, on that note, a painfully honest person - she gives too many details, and is not modest about her sex life in the slightest. Of course, mind you, she stays true to Arashi, despite still being in love with Hiroyuki even after so many years of not speaking to him.

Not only due to her aggressive boyfriend, but also to having constantly lived in her older sister’s shadow, Miwako has become a rather insecure person. She’s particularly insecure with her ability as a fashion designer, and seems to have given up hope of creating her own fashion line - her pipe dream - denouncing her designs as “unoriginal” or like copy-cats of her sister’s style. Furthermore, she has become very insecure with her relationship with Arashi, because of his jealousy and lack of trust in Miwako. She tries very hard to be the best girlfriend she can be for him, and not to make him mad, trying to accept him as he is, but he always seems to get mad no matter what, and because Miwako is so set on taking in both the good and the bad in him, she turns her unhappiness in their relationship on herself, as if it is her fault. She is aware, though, that Arashi should take a lot of the blame, and is unhappy with his jealousy, but can’t understand why he does not believe in her more. (To top that off, she still feels guilty about Hiroyuki, and misses him immensely, Arashi having told her that she is no longer allowed to see him or else he’ll break up with her when they were fifteen.)

To bring up her imagination again, I would like to point out that Miwako has a certain way of dealing with her problems. As a child, when Miwako was upset, she adopted the method of saying she had a tummy ache instead of actually explaining why she was sad; over time, this grew into a psychological issue, Miwako subconsciously making herself truly sick to her stomach whenever she became upset. Arashi and Hiro, however, gave her a bottle of “Magic Medicine” (originally intended as a Christmas present from Santa, the year she asked for stars for Christmas), full of star-shaped sugar candies. One year, Miwako confronted her father about Santa Claus, wondering why, if Santa was not real, the Magic Medicine “worked so well” to cure her tummy aches; her father told her that this bottle was not from Santa, but full of love from Arashi and Hiro, and that it was their love that made her belly aches go away and made her feel better. Even at eighteen years old, Miwako still takes the “medicines,” believing that the bottle of love from her childhood friends turns the candy inside into “Magic Medicine.” A touching story, but I would like to highlight her emotional insecurity and mental issues, particularly with depression and her extreme naïveté, that underlie that story.

Overall, however, Miwako is a very sympathetic character; she wants to be the best girlfriend she can be, and tries to take people as they are without judgment. She’s very happy-go-lucky, friendly, and overly emotional; she’s extremely connected with other people, and is very easily upset, but has horrible management with her own depression and insecurities. She’s very naïve, but also very sexual, and shoots from the lip without realising what should and should not be said publicly. She’s a very friendly and nurturing character, despite being a bit strange and unconventional, and usually makes friends very easily. She’s cute and zany, nice to a fault, extremely gullible and ditsy, not confrontational at all, a very loyal friend, and a snappy dresser, to boot. ♥

[third person / log sample]:
Another sunny day passed by; and then another; and another; more, and more, and more, and yet still more, and soon enough the summer passed by with such stealth that hardly anyone realised it had left, and autumn was upon them. It was chilly that day. Another chilly day passed by; and then another; and another; and the process repeated itself again until we landed ourselves, more or less comfortably than last year or the next, in the dwindling and cold month of November.

They ranked second place in the fashion show, and everyone smiled and laughed and cried and took pictures and got drunk and kissed and hugged and everything after that. And they were happy. It was chilly that day, too.

Currently, the cold was particularly biting. A lot of children waltzed stylishly through the hallways and corridors, up and down stairs, back and forth between friends, loitering with lovers. Someone’s cell phone rang; someone hastily answered it. They talked; they hung up. This was high school.

Miwako, on the other hand, did not reach anyone on her cell phone. The answer was mechanical, a computerised woman’s voice, and it said: “You have reached the message inbox of” - a pause, and a deep voice, a human voice, cut in - “Arashi.” They wanted her to leave a message after the tone, but instead, more pathetically than defiantly, she just hung up; the call ended. This was high school.

The next class was History of Fashion; Arashi would not show up. The class before had been a rudimentary English class; Arashi had not shown up there, either, but that was more because he wasn’t in that class, rather than he chose not to come out of personal preference. And it was the same for the class before that, too. This was also high school. That marked four hours since Miwako had spoken with her boyfriend that day, and it was unusually upsetting. No calls were answered, no e-mails replied to, and it was all because that stupid announcer on that reality TV show - because he was cute. Coincidentally, he played guitar - much like Arashi, except the announcer was outrageously successful and one of the rising pop artists in Japan, in a happy guitaring duo. The truth of the matter was, of course, that Arashi was jealous.

And Miwako knew that; Miwako had always known that. Miwako knew it when they were six, she knew it when they were twelve, and she still knew it now when they were eighteen. But she didn’t figure there was much to be done about it (which, naturally, did not stop a woman’s heart from lamenting it). Miwako was quite determined to accept Arashi as he was - isn’t that what love is? She had her heart set on loving Arashi unconditionally; no matter what rude things he said, mean things he did, or hurtful things he inflicted upon her, she was his girlfriend, and she was in love with him, and so it would be until she could not be happy at all. At a point when Miwako could not be at all happy, then that was the time to let it go, she imagined.

But overall, she was quite happy. Arashi was usually pretty well-behaved, and when he wasn’t, Miwako was usually pretty sure it was her fault. Like right now - she should have known better than to swoon over some celebrity - a complete stranger - with their classmate in front of Arashi; she even went so far as to ask Arashi what he thought of him! (Men’s opinions on other men were very interesting, particularly if the men were gay, bi, or generally equal opportunity lovers - because that was all really, really cool! ♥)

And before it had been her fault for confessing to him her love for their best friend, Hiroyuki. It was her fault when she broke her promise to Arashi, and went ahead and talked to Hiro, however reluctantly, despite her oath to never see or speak to the boy she grew up with ever again, on pain of being dumped. This was high school, too.

In short, it was always her fault. If Arashi was jealous, then Miwako had definitely slipped up and done something stupid to make him that way, she felt like. Never, ever did she cheat on him - as much as he might suspect it! - and even with Hiro, whom for years Miwako was certain (and devastated) that she loved just the same as she loved Arashi, she had never done anything unfaithful.

[info]applerabbits

But Miwako knew very well that cheating on an emotional level was just as hurtful as cheating on a physical level, and she had cheated very much, with the same boy, with her heart; and it hurt Arashi. That was her fault, too.

In short, Miwako was just not a very good girlfriend. That was the verdict she reached on this chilly November day.

She was contemplating, instead of listening to a lecture on panniers and the not-very-shapeliness of Rococo fashion, how she could make it up to him. There weren’t any concerts going on in the area at the time (well, she had heard that the pop duo the cute announcer from the reality TV show was a part of was playing a show in Mitaka, but there were several reasons not to attend that). There were also no good movies out. Naturally, she’d offer her body up, and she was even willing to do that and also that, if he was in the mood for that kind of thing; but there was always the possibility that he’d turn her down.

“In the winter time, the men in eighteenth century France would wear-”

Wait! Hold that thought, teacher! Just stop - right - there!
Yes! Duh! Of course! Oh, Miwako, you silly goose, what took you so long? She’d buy him clothes - designer clothes! Nice clothes! Expensive clothes! Something from his favourite designer - who was unfortunately not Miwako’s sister, but Sissy would always be Miwako’s favourite! - and something that would be practical and warm for the winter. Oh, it would be so wonderful, and he'd be so happy - and Arashi did love getting new clothes~!

An interruption - this was the reason that Miwako did not make excellent grades; she really admired all those geniuses who could take Honours classes. How could they pay attention to and remember all of that stuff? She pondered this as she checked around the class (it now being study time, after a short lecture), to see if anyone was looking, and sneakily removed her cell phone from her purse. She could never be an Honours student, she was thinking. This was high school.

A few seconds passed, and passed again, and a “Send” button was clicked - and a message was, indeed, sent. And another. And another. And yet another.

12.13.54: text message to “Sissy♥”
hello! h.o.f class is v. boring. could miwako borrow some money this afternoon to ride the train to harajuku? I‘ll return it soon!

12.14.05: text message to “Sissy♥”
it‘s very cold now and it‘s important for arashi to have a new coat right away so he can be warm.

12.14.15: text message to “Sissy♥”
miwako will make dinner tonight! ♥ I love you! ♥

12.14.25: text message to “Sissy♥”
PS - am I watching alice tonight? Y/N? (if Y - can arashi come over? please please? ♥)

Miwako would make it up to Arashi for being a bad girlfriend, and then Miwako would make it up to Mikako for being a burdensome sister - that was the plan, at least. She had no plan for how to get caught back up with the lesson, however; after tucking her cell phone safely away in her purse, she leaned over to the girl beside her, complimented the girl’s autumn ensemble, and as a reward was given the page numbers for the reading. This was high school.

The sky outside was very blank, with no clouds in it. It was very chilly that day (and so a perfect day for coat-shopping for angry, overly jealous boyfriends). It would be chilly the next day; and the day after that; and even the day after that; until the autumn too passed with such stealth that hardly anybody realized it, and the snow began to fall. It would still be chilly in the winter, until chilly day after chilly day after chilly day passed, and the winter melted into spring again, more or less comfortably than it had last year or the next. The chimes rang for the lunch period. This was high school. Miwako had made a bento for Arashi the night before - unlike the weather, she could not predict him.
